Discover a more elevated coffee experience with Encounter Coffee Poesía, a premium single-origin coffee from Monte Bello, Antioquia, Colombia. A member of our team went to visit farmers in Colombia to identify amazing single origin coffees, roasted at the source, so we can bring a new experience to coffee lovers in Canada.
The first coffee, Poesía, is grown at 1800–1900 MASL. MASL stands for meters above sea level, which is the altitude where the coffee was grown. In coffee, higher elevation often matters because cooler mountain temperatures can slow how quickly the coffee cherries ripen, which can help the beans develop more sweetness, density, and flavour complexity.
Poesía is rated at 86 points. Coffee has traditionally been judged on a 100-point scale, and coffees scoring 80 points or higher are widely recognized in the specialty coffee world as being in the specialty range. In simple terms, that means they stand above standard commercial coffee in quality, distinction, and overall cup experience.
So what does 86 points mean?
It means this is not just “good coffee.” It sits comfortably above the basic specialty threshold and into a more premium range. In practical terms:
- Below 80: generally not considered specialty coffee
- 80–84: specialty coffee
- 86+: a more premium tier within specialty coffee
- 88+: increasingly rare and exceptional
That breakdown is a practical industry-style explanation rather than a single official consumer chart, but it aligns with SCA material noting that coffees are often grouped around 80–84 and 86+, and that higher-scoring coffees command stronger premiums.
An 86-point coffee usually means a cup that is more refined, more memorable, and more carefully produced than everyday commercial coffee. You may have never tasted anything like this before.
Poesía offers tasting notes of caramel, chocolate, and mandarin:
- Caramel suggests a smooth, rounded sweetness
- Chocolate points to a smooth, comforting depth in the cup.
- Mandarin suggests a gentle citrus brightness that helps make the coffee feel lively and layered.
This coffee is also single-origin, meaning it comes from one specific place rather than being blended from multiple regions.
Its medium roast profile gives it a balanced and approachable feel: enough roast development for sweetness and body, while still allowing the bean’s natural character to come through.
How it compares to everyday commercial coffee
Most everyday commercial coffees are not marketed with specialty-style point scores and are generally not positioned as specialty coffee. By contrast, Poesía is presented with a defined origin, high growing altitude, distinct tasting notes, and an 86-point specialty-grade profile — all signals of a more premium and more distinctive coffee experience.
